Untitled (RIOT) is inspired by the text works of Christopher Wool and the Black Square by Malevitch. It is constructed from 4 separately printed panels, each 4 x 105 cm, that are combined using a metal frame and an A0 panel glued at the back. Together with the zine “Apocalypse Now” this was a key work in the expo as every panel contained a single ‘letter’ and this was the most direct clue to facilitate a literal reading of the work. Signed on request on the back. Edition of 1.

Untitled (RIOT) together with SELL and Little FOOL and FALL was created for the exhibition MAAK RUIMTE in Post Erasmuslaan 5.

I wanted to make this work pretty big, to try and match the RIOT painting from Wool, although it still is quite a bit smaller. I decided on this exact size because the black square in the O panel is now exactly as big as the black square in Victory over the Sun, which is exactly the size of the original black square by Malevitch. These two black squares were positioned at opposite far ends of the exhibition space and to me ‘bracketed’ the exhibition.
